Why is Bowie State University in a campaign?
Private support is vital to the growth of Bowie State University. We are proud to say that thousands of students have received an extraordinary education at Bowie State University. Many of these students can attribute a part of their success to the generosity of individuals who believed in the power of education. We look to our dedicated friends and future supporters to join with us in assuring access and opportunity to future generations of students. The purpose of The Campaign for Bowie State University: Believe. Invest. Grow. is to strengthen our schools and programs, increase the number of scholarships, build the endowment, and enhance the infrastructure and technology campus-wide.

What is the Campaign's financial goal?
The goal of The Campaign for Bowie State University: Believe. Invest. Grow. is $15 million. This goal was established based on the needs and priorities of the university's schools and programs in support of its outstanding students and faculty.

When did the campaign begin and how long will it last?
The Campaign for Bowie State University: Believe. Invest. Grow was publicly launch in November, 2008.  Like most campaigns, The Campaign for Bowie State University: Believe. Invest. Grow started with a multi-year “quiet phase.” That phase included not only planning and priority-setting, but the solicitation of lead gifts from many donors. The campaign will conclude upon the successful achievement of the $15 million goal by year 2013

Why does Bowie State University need my financial help if it gets funding from the state?
Your contribution does not replace state funding but does provide the important resources needed to ensure that Bowie State University can be ranked as an institution that provides all students with a quality education.

Can I choose the area my gift will benefit?
Yes.  Because the priorities of The Campaign for Bowie State University: Believe. Invest. Grow encompass all areas of campus, any area you choose to assist will benefit the campaign. You can designate the purpose of your gift to a school, the library, athletics or to the unrestricted Annual Fund to be used where the need is greatest. 

Can I make my gift anonymously?
 Yes. Bowie State University Foundation willingly accepts anonymous gifts and will protect the anonymity of any donor who requests it. Anonymous gifts will be counted in the campaign and are tax-deductible to the extent of the law.

What if I can't make a large gift? Will my gift of $50.00 really make a difference?
Gifts of any size are critical to the success of The Campaign for Bowie State University: Believe. Invest. Grow.  Along with the dollar goal of $15 million, BSU also has a goal of increasing the number of donors who support the university on an annual basis. The cumulative result of many gifts from alumni, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and corporations will help us to achieve both of these goals. Pledges or gifts are also payable in installments, which allow many donors to spread out their commitment over a number of years.

Is my gift to Bowie State University Foundation tax deductible?
Yes.  All contributions are fully tax deductible as allowed by law.

What is an endowed fund?
An endowed fund provides continued support for the purpose designated. The principal of an endowment is never spent. It is invested and the earnings are used to support the purpose of the fund.

Why is it so important to make sure I give every year?
Unlike large long-term gifts, Annual Fund gifts provide Bowie State University Foundation with money immediately, which can be used to benefit any area of the university.

What is the 1865 Society?
The 1865 Society was founded to recognize those who have given a gift of $1,000 or more per year.

How can my gift be doubled or tripled?
Many corporations often match gifts. Any donor may maximize his/her gift by contacting their employer's human resources office for the appropriate forms and then submitting the form to the Bowie State University Foundation.

Why do I make my check in support of the campaign payable to the Bowie State University Foundation?
The Bowie State University Foundation is the non profit entity, established in 1972 to accept and manage gifts that help advance Bowie State University as a student-centered institution of excellence.
